10.05 Briefing

10.10 Start

11.00 (approx. depending on age/pace of participants) Return to Optus Stadium.
Bike activities for children, chats for parents, snack at the Camfield.

Please make sure you and your child/ren have a bicycle in working order. You may want to run a quick ABCDE check the day before the event.

A IS FOR AIR
Pump the tyres to correct pressure, as stamped onto the side wall of tyres.
Also check the tyres for signs of wear in the tread or crack on the side walls.

B IS FOR BRAKES
Both brakes should stop the bike when applied, yet leave a gap at handlebar.
Make sure the brakes allow the bike wheel to roll freely (not rubbing).

C IS FOR CHAIN
The chain should be able to spin backwards freely. If not, check the gears are in the correct alignment.
Chain should be free of dirt/muck and not dry/rusted.

D IS TO DROP THE BIKE
Drop the bike to the ground from about 5cm. If you hear any funny clanging sounds, this could indicate a loose part to the bike.
Investigate and speak to your local bike shop or bike mechanic.

E IS FOR HANDLEBAR ENDS
Make sure the holes at the end of the handlebar are covered. These can be quite dangerous if they are exposed and you have a crash.

Wait – what’s a bike bus?

A bike bus is a group of people (children and parents) who cycle to school. It’s called a “bus” because rides along a fixed route and schedule, so it can pick up more “passengers” along the way (yes, just like a standard bus, you wait for it: the bus doesn’t wait for you, otherwise it would never get to school on time!)

Did you know that Perth currently has the highest number of bike buses than any other city in Australia?

Cottesloe Primary School just started their own Bike Bus, so we are getting close to 10 school bike buses in Perth!

They will all be there, so that you can ask them how to start a bike bus for your school too!

Alternatively, download the Bike Bus Toolkit from the Town of Victoria Park website, or book a training session for your school.
