BIKE BUS 101

After a successful event in Victoria Park,
we are coming to your school!

What is a Bike Bus?

A bike bus is a group of people (children and parents) who cycle to school. It’s called a “bus” because rides along a fixed route and schedule, so it can pick up more “passengers” along the way (yes, just like a standard bus, you wait for it: the bus doesn’t wait for you, otherwise it would never get to school on time!)

Learn how to start a bike bus for your school in this fun and engaging workshop. Walk away with the necessary knowledge and a toolkit full of actionable advice.

What are the benefits?

For parents and children

  • Allow children to socialise before school while burning off some energy, so that are more focused when they get to school
  • Enhance social connectedness, community, belonging
  • Encourage active transportation usage

For the community and the environment

  • Make our kids feel safe while riding all together (a group of kids is much more visible than one or two kids biking alone)
  • Reduce traffic congestions around the school
  • Improve public health and wellbeing

About the event

Learn how Lathlain Primary School started the first Bike Bus in the Town of Victoria Park, followed by Millen Primary School and other schools in Perth (Mosman Park Primary School, Bayswater Primary School). Your school could be the next!

The Town’s Integrated Transport Strategy sets the strategic direction for managing the Town’s transport network. The Strategy outlines how we will provide an integrated, accessible and sustainable transport network that connects people to places and supports the Town as a liveable inner-city community.

Your Move is a free program that provides information and support to help you find healthier, more active ways to get around. Whether it’s finding nearby places to walk, wheel or ride to, or walking with your kids to school, we’re here to help you make small, sustainable changes to how you get around.

Why it matters

Victoria Park’s community has expressed a desire to fast-track the development of the Town’s cycling network. By helping kids and families ride to school together, we are enabling safety in numbers while helping people shift trips to active transportation, reducing car traffic, fostering community, and fighting climate change.

Bike Buses around the world

Bike Bus is a global movement. In a growing number of cities and towns around the world it is a regular mode of transportation to safely and joyfully bike with kids to school.

Here are a few examples from overseas. Australia is still lagging behind, so be among the first ones to join the Victoria Park Bike Bus Network!
